Science Overview

An introduction of some science topics involved in healing arthritis naturally

Pathogenesis

Gut Health and Microbiome have a major influence on disease such as Arthritis

Pathogenesis is the origin and development of disease – In this case Inflammation driven Arthritis and back pain.
If we know the root causes, we can do something about it!

The current explanation for the development of inflammatory arthritis is that it is caused by a combination of genetics, microbiome changes, environmental triggers, immune dysregulation, and barrier dysfunction. The good news is, we can influence all of that in a positive way – when you know how!

Environmental

Environmental factors are major contributors to disease.

Knowledge regarding environmental factors offers you a large degree of control over your health.

Think of a plant. Under the wrong environmental conditions it can become diseased and suffer an early death.

However, with the correct environmental conditions, the plant can thrive and live a long and healthy life.

The expression of genes, the balance of the microbiome, immune system function and oral and gut barrier integrity, are all heavily influenced by environmental factors such as diet, dietary triggers, gut health, toxin exposure, infections, physical activity, stress and sleep.
This means that, although genetic risk factors may be inherited, many of the underlying drivers of inflammatory diseases can be highly modified through lifestyle and environmental choices.

Epigenetics

Genetic factors that influence inflammatory Arthritis and Ankylosing Spondylitis HLA B27

Epigenetics is the study of how gene expression is influenced by environmental and lifestyle factors. Rather than changing the genes themselves, epigenetics determines whether genes are switched on or off, and to what extent. This explains why people with the same genetic risk can have very different outcomes. Our genes set the potential, but epigenetics shows that this potential is not fixed – gene expression can shift over time, making some people more resilient and others more susceptible to chronic conditions.

While genes like HLA-B27 and HLA-DR4 are linked to conditions like ankylosing spondylitis and rheumatoid arthritis, most people with these genes never develop the disease. Genes increase risk but don’t guarantee illness. Environmental and lifestyle factors play a major role – not only in triggering these conditions but also in calming them. By improving things like diet, gut health, nutrient balance, stress, exercise and sleep, it’s possible to reduce inflammation and, in many verified cases, put the disease into remission.
